Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring content, entity signals and third-party sources so large language models reliably cite a brand in AI-generated answers. The target surfaces are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. The unit of success is the citation, not the click. A brand appearing inside an AI answer carries more weight than appearing in a list of ten blue links - because the AI has already pre-recommended it.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimises for a position on a results page. GEO optimises for inclusion inside a synthesised answer. The overlap between top Google results and AI-cited sources has dropped from around 70% to under 20% - which means ranking #1 on Google no longer guarantees you appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers, and vice versa. SEO and GEO share foundations (clean indexing, structured data, authority signals) but diverge sharply on content structure (extractable claims over keyword density) and authority surfaces (PR, review platforms, Reddit, Quora and YouTube transcripts matter more than backlinks alone).

Three metrics matter: prompt coverage (percentage of prompts where the brand appears), favourability (sentiment and ranking position within the answer), and source share (which third-party domains the AI is citing instead of or alongside the brand's own site). One caveat we flag upfront: AI engines are non-deterministic. The same prompt can return different answers minute to minute. That rules out deterministic A/B testing the way paid ads allow. Measurement is statistical - rolling samples across multiple runs and engines, not single before/after snapshots. Any agency selling guaranteed citations is bluffing.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. SEO is the foundation GEO depends on. Around three-quarters of AI-cited URLs still rank in the top 10 organic results, so strong technical SEO, clean indexing and topical authority remain prerequisites. Be honest about category fit first. The biggest lift sits in information-heavy, considered-purchase categories where buyers actually prompt LLMs during research - B2B SaaS, professional services, financial services, B2B insurance, IT and cybersecurity, healthcare information and online education. High-consideration consumer categories (mortgages, life insurance, EVs, hi-fi, premium DTC) sit in the next tier. Impulse purchases, fashion, FMCG, novelty DTC and most local trade services see materially less benefit - the buying decision isn't info-driven.
